9 AM SUMMER WORSHIP: Sunday, July 5, begins our casual 9 AM summer worship service. Traditional 10 AM worship resumes September 13.
NO SUMMER SUNDAY SCHOOL: There is no children’s Sunday School during the summer. Instead, children are invited to the Nursery, Room 204. Sunday School resumes on Kick-Off Sunday, September 13.
SUMMER OFFICE HOURS: The Church summer office hours are 9 AM to 2 PM, Monday through Friday until September 8.
2009 VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL: This summer’s VBS theme is Camp Edge: Experience, Discover God Everywhere! VBS week is August 31 through September 3. The program will run from 9 AM to 12 Noon each day. Ages 4 years old through 5th grade are welcome. The week will offer fun games, creative crafts and inspiring Bible Stories. Your child will receive a colorful t-shirt, snacks and a week they won’t soon forget! The materials fee is $50 (scholarships available) and will cover all expenses for your child. Make sure to register your child today by calling the church office at 516-627-4911.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: We need teachers, additional helpers and volunteers to make this year’s VBS the best yet! Please let Lori know if you would like to help in any way. We have a job for everyone and you won’t want to miss out on this lively week in the life of our church! It takes numerous volunteers to make VBS a success. 2009/10 CONFIRMATION CLASS: If you know any young people 8th grade or above who have not been confirmed, please tell them about our 2009/10 Confirmation Class. The class meets on Sunday at 8:50 AM beginning September 13. Call the church office for more information
KICK-OFF SUNDAY AND BRUNCH SEPTEMBER 13: Join us for Worship at 10 AM on September 13 for Kick-Off Sunday. On this special day our Sunday School children begin a new program year and our Chancel Choir begins a new season. Join us as well for our annual Brunch at 11 AM in the Parish Hall.
MONDAY MORNING WOMEN’S PRAYER BREAKFAST: Join us at the Landmark Diner Mondays at 9 AM as our Women’s Prayer group meets.
THE FAITH CLUB ~ SEPTEMBER BOOK CLUB SELECTION: Join us in September for a discussion of The Faith Club: A Muslim, A Christian, A Jew–Three Women Search for Understanding, by Ranya Idliby, Suzanne Oliver, and Priscilla Warner. Publisher’s Weekly writes, “In the wake of 9/11, Idiliby, an American Muslim of Palestinian descent, sought out fellow mothers of the Jewish and Christian faiths to write a children’s book on the commonalities among their respective traditions. In their first meeting, however, the women realized they would have to address their differences first. Oliver, An Episcopalian who was raised Catholic, irked Warner, a Jewish woman and children’s author, with her description of the Crucifixion story, which sounded too much like ‘Jews killed Jesus’ for Warner’s taste. Idliby’s efforts to join in on the usual ‘Judeo-Christian’ debate tap into a sense of alienation she already feels in the larger Muslim community, where she is unable to find a progressive mosque that reflects her non-veil-wearing, spiritual Islam. The ladies come to call their group a ‘faith club’ and, over time, midwife each other into stronger belief in their own respective religions. More Fight Club than book club, the coauthors pull no punches; their outstanding honesty makes for a page-turning read, rare for a religion nonfiction book. From Idliby’s graphic defense of the Palestinian cause, Oliver’s vacillations between faith and doubt, and Warner’s struggles to acknowledge God’s existence, almost every taboo topic is explored on this engaging spiritual ride.”

FROM THE WEST: From the Long Island Expressway/I 495, drive east. Take Exit 35 on to Shelter Rock Road. (Or from the Northern State Parkway/Grand Central, take Exit 27 North on to Shelter Rock Road.) Turn left (north) on to Shelter Rock Road toward Manhasset. Drive approximately 2 miles. Turn right on Northern Blvd. Go ¾ mile. The church will be on the left, 1845 Northern Blvd., corner of Northern Blvd. and Copley (across from the Americana shopping center). Turn left on Copley and take a left into the church parking lot.
